In-turning of the eyelid- Entropion repair

Entropion is a medical condition in which the eyelid (usually the lower lid) folds inward. It is
very uncomfortable, as the eyelashes constantly rub against the cornea and irritate it. It occurs
most commonly in people over 60 years of age. Entropion is most commonly caused by aging
changes, allowing the eyelid muscles and tendons to become lax. It could also be caused by
scarring of the inside of the eyelid secondary to trauma or previous infection. If not corrected,
this problem could cause mucus discharge and significant corneal damage. Treatment is a
relatively simple surgery in which lower eyelid is tightened and several everting sutures are
placed in the skin of the lower eyelid to minimize chances of recurrence. Prognosis is excellent
if surgery is performed before the cornea is damaged.
